We all have “down days” and feel sad or hopeless from time to time. Feeling sad is a perfectly natural emotion and is nothing to be ashamed of or worried about. However, if your down days turn into weeks… if you regularly encounter feelings of sadness, hopelessness, guilt, self-critical thoughts, or diminished interest in activities that used to bring you pleasure… you may have more than just the blues. You may be suffering from chronic or severe depression.

How Can You Tell If You’re Suffering From Depression?

Depression is a painful and lonely experience that seems to slowly suck all of the joy out of life.

Besides experiencing strong or ongoing feelings of sadness, helplessness, guilt, and shame, people suffering from chronic or severe depression also experience a general decrease in energy, diminished sexual drive, drastic changes in their eating and sleeping habits, and an inability to think clearly or effectively.

If you’re suffering from depression, it may seem that no one, not even you, understands why you’re feeling the way you do. However, depression does not come about without underlying causes and reasons. And, though it may not seem possible now, treatment options are available that can help you overcome depression and move forward in life with confidence and optimism.

Getting the Help You Need

Although psychotherapy or counseling is often the first treatment recommended, if you believe you’re suffering from depression the first thing you should do is contact your physician and schedule a complete physical examination. Many physical conditions, such as infections, allergies, and nutrition deficiencies can lead to symptoms of depression.

Once your physician has ruled out the possibility of a physical cause for your depression, it is time to search for a psychologist or psychotherapist in your area who specializes in helping people overcome depression.

While some people may start feeling better just by making changes to their lifestyle (sleeping more, eating healthier, and spending more time with friends and loved ones), most people with clinical depression need to do more than just make simple lifestyle changes in order to start feeling better. They often need medication, psychotherapy, or some combination of the two.

It is not uncommon for depression to be the result of one’s viewing life in habitually negative ways, which naturally leads to recurring negative feelings and emotions.

  • Reduce anxiety and stress in your personal and professional life
  • Resolve any relationship issues that may be contributing to your depression
  • Cope with the side effects of any medications you’re taking
  • Recognize the triggers for your depression
  • Develop techniques to reduce the symptoms of your depression
  • Understand the underlying causes of your depression
  • Reframe the thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs that have led to your depression in order to prevent your depression from returning in the future
